Workplace culture: what it is and how to create positive impact in your organization

How to create a winning company culture that will attract candidates, retain top talent and launch your business on the path

Forbes describes workplace culture as "the shared values, belief systems, attitudes and the set of assumptions that people in a workplace share". A bad workplace culture breeds negativity, poor performance, and at times, a toxic work environment. This can lead to a bad company reputation, high turnover, and low productivity.


In order to effectively change workplace culture, there are two things you need to do: first, you need to be able to identify a bad workplace culture. Then, you need to take action to change it.How to identify a bad workplace culture:

  • Colleagues don't align with the team/company's values, leading to frequent tension and conflict
  • The team can communicate its core values, attitudes, and assumptions, but their actions don't align with their words


How to change workplace culture:

  • Be open to employee's points of frustration and communicate openly - gossip between coworkers won't solve anything
  • Provide honest (but respectful) feedback - both from manager to employee, and vice versa!
  • Set clear, measurable goals and incentives to motivate, and employees can share their own work goals with their manager in order to receive good support
  • Define desired behaviours and values to let everyone know what they're striving towards
  • Don't rush - good culture will take time & investment to achieve! Gradual change > overhaul
